Conservative Care for Disc Bulge

Hearing that you have a “disc bulge” on a scan can sound alarming — but it's worth knowing that disc changes are extremely common, and many people with a bulging disc on imaging have little or no pain at all. What matters most is understanding whether and how the disc is contributing to your symptoms, and what can be done to help.

At Mordialloc Chiropractic, Dr Renae takes a thorough history and performs a careful clinical assessment before drawing any conclusions about your disc. She'll discuss what the scan findings mean in the context of your symptoms, assess the surrounding joints and muscles, and help you understand your options — including what conservative care is likely to achieve and what its limits are.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Local pain in the lower back or neck, often with muscle spasm
  • Pain that radiates into the arm (cervical disc) or leg (lumbar disc)
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the arm, hand, leg, or foot
  • Numbness along a specific nerve distribution
  • Pain that worsens with bending forward, sitting, or certain movements
  • Weakness in the arm or hand, leg or foot
  • Pain that improves with lying down or gentle walking

Understanding disc bulges

The intervertebral discs sit between each vertebra and act as shock absorbers for the spine. A disc bulge occurs when the soft inner material pushes outward against the disc's outer layer — sometimes irritating or compressing a nearby nerve root. A herniation (sometimes called a “slipped disc”) involves the inner material breaking through the outer layer entirely.

Many disc bulges are not caused by a single dramatic event, but rather by years of accumulated load — sitting, bending, and compressive forces on the spine that gradually stress the disc's structure over time.

How chiropractic care may help

Where disc-related pain is driven or aggravated by surrounding joint restriction and muscle tension, addressing these can meaningfully reduce load on the affected disc and improve pain and function. Dr Renae uses gentle, carefully chosen techniques that protect the disc while working on the structures around it.

She'll advise on positions and activities to modify during recovery, and will refer you to your GP or a spinal specialist where symptoms are severe, progressive, or suggest significant neurological compromise. For some presentations — particularly those involving progressive weakness or bladder and bowel changes — urgent medical review takes priority over conservative care.

Common Questions

Disc Bulge & Chiropractic Care

Conservative care — including chiropractic — is often the first recommended approach for disc-related pain, and many people improve significantly without surgery. Dr Renae assesses whether and how the disc is contributing to your symptoms, uses gentle techniques to reduce surrounding joint restriction and muscle tension, and advises on activity modification. She'll tell you honestly if she feels a different approach is needed.

The majority of people with disc bulges and herniations improve with conservative care and do not require surgery. Surgery becomes a consideration when there is progressive neurological deficit (worsening weakness or numbness), failure to respond to several months of conservative management, or specific urgent presentations involving bladder or bowel function. Dr Renae will advise you clearly and refer on where needed.

Recovery timelines vary widely depending on the severity of the disc involvement, the presence of nerve symptoms, and individual factors. Many people notice meaningful improvement within a few weeks of starting conservative care, though full recovery from a significant disc herniation can take several months. Dr Renae will give you a realistic picture after your assessment.

Safety depends on the nature and severity of the disc presentation. Dr Renae takes a full history and performs a careful assessment before beginning any care. For appropriate cases, gentle chiropractic techniques are adapted specifically to protect the disc and surrounding structures. She will not proceed with care she does not believe is safe and suitable for your situation.
