Chiropractic Support Through Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings profound change to a woman’s body — and with those changes come new demands on the spine, pelvis, hips, and surrounding muscles. As the belly grows, the centre of gravity shifts, the pelvis widens, hormone-driven ligament laxity increases joint mobility, and muscles work harder to compensate. For many women, this accumulates into discomfort that significantly impacts quality of life during what should be an exciting time.

At Mordialloc Chiropractic, Dr Renae has experience caring for pregnant patients at every stage of pregnancy. She uses only gentle, pregnancy-adapted techniques and positioning — nothing that puts pressure on the abdomen — and tailors her approach to what's safe and appropriate at each trimester. Your comfort and safety, and that of your baby, are the priority at every visit.

Common pregnancy-related complaints seen at the clinic

  • Lower back pain and sacral aching that worsens as the pregnancy progresses
  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) — pain in the pubic symphysis, sacroiliac joints, or around the hips
  • Round ligament discomfort as the uterus expands
  • Hip pain and groin tightness from altered gait and pelvic changes
  • Upper back and rib pain as posture shifts with the growing belly
  • Sciatica — nerve-related leg pain that can flare during pregnancy
  • Neck pain and headaches from postural changes

What to expect at your appointment

Your first visit begins with a thorough history, including your obstetric history and any relevant complications. Dr Renae will discuss what you're experiencing, assess your spine and pelvis in a way that's comfortable for your stage of pregnancy, and explain her findings clearly before any care begins.

Techniques used during pregnancy are chosen specifically for safety and comfort. Positioning is adapted so that no pressure is placed on the abdomen, and the level of force used is gentle and appropriate for the increased joint mobility that pregnancy hormones create.

A note on collaboration

Dr Renae is happy to work alongside your midwife, obstetrician, or GP during your pregnancy. If any aspect of your presentation suggests that a different provider should be involved — or that chiropractic care is not appropriate at that time — she will advise you clearly and support the appropriate referral.

Common Questions

Pregnancy & Chiropractic Care

For most women with uncomplicated pregnancies, gentle chiropractic care is considered safe. Dr Renae takes a full history before any care begins — including your obstetric history and any complications — to confirm that chiropractic is appropriate for your situation. Techniques and positioning are adapted specifically for pregnancy, and care is only provided where Dr Renae is confident it is safe and suitable.

Yes — many women see Dr Renae throughout all three trimesters. Care is adapted appropriately for each stage. If you have any concerns or complications in the first trimester, it's worth discussing with your GP or midwife first, and Dr Renae will also take this into account during your initial assessment.

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy, and many women find that gentle chiropractic assessment and care directed at the sacroiliac joints, pelvis, and surrounding muscles provides meaningful relief. Results vary from person to person, and Dr Renae will discuss what's realistic for your specific presentation.

Yes — it's always good practice to keep your maternity care team informed of any other care you're receiving during pregnancy. Dr Renae is happy to communicate with your other providers and to work collaboratively as part of your wider pregnancy care.
